Specific Phobia

Specific phobias are characterized by overpowering fear and physical discomfort associated with an object or situation.

When exposed to that object or situation, the person will experience a significant level of discomfort, usually manifesting as anxiety or panic.

Most specific phobias begin in childhood as ta result of a negative experience such as being locked in a closet or being injured by a pet. Many times we outgrow our phobias. In some cases, they continue to bother us through adulthood.

Treatment is recommended if the phobia alters our lifestyle.
